Biagio Marini and Dario Castello are among the most important instrumental composers of Monteverdi's time. Both were also in the service of the Basilica of San Marco in Venice: Marini as violinist and Castello as leader of the wind section. They were therefore under the direction of Claudio Monteverdi, the bandmaster. Although her music is based on the polyphonic tradition, her passion for instrumental virtuosity represents an important contribution to the development of the instrumental genre sonata. Given the quality of this music, it is hardly surprising that Monteverdi wrote so little pure instrumental music.
