Fulfilling the commission of Count von Troyer, who had wished for a work based on the example of Beethoven's famous Septet op. 20, Schubert, although a fervent admirer of this composer, delivered an octet entirely against the agreement. The expanded instrumentation paved the way for him to the symphonic movement, and the work proves to be much more successful and personal in form and expression than anything that could be compared with it.
