C. P.E Bach's six string symphonies from 1773 are among the most original and technically demanding symphonic string music of the second half of the 18th century. The composer was expressly encouraged to do so by his patron, the Handel admirer and Mozart patron Gottfried van Swieten, who gave free rein to his "original genius" and his avant-garde desire to experiment. His string symphonies seem to be based more on his free piano fantasies than on the symphonies of his contemporaries. There is no more ideal interpreter than Café Zimmermann for these extremely witty works.
