In the early 1660s, Schütz, now considered to be part of the pale glory of the Dresden court, began to think about his own death - he had already passed the age of 75. So he set to music the 176 verses of the famous Psalm 119 without expecting a performance: his swan song was rather meant for eternity. Ten years later, this opus ultimum had taken the form of eleven double-choir motets. However, the manuscripts were lost, and so it was to take three centuries before the works were reconstructed - and finally sung.
