It was after his seventieth birthday that Georg Philipp Telemann composed the festive music for the consecration of the newly constructed church in Nienstaedten, near Hamburg, to be held on 16 May 1751. An influential composer of European rank, Telemann could draw on rich experience in this type of »extraordinary« sacred festive music. What at first glance seems to be a mere occasional work turns out to be a masterpiece brimming with ideas and imagination – Telemann's »occasional works« almost always offer his best music! Such works intended for a single performance served him as a field of experimentation for the further development of his personal compositional style. As a result, the modernity and originality and the intelligent and careful design everywhere present in these works never fail to amaze us. In addition, Dorothee Mields and Klaus Mertens sing two previously unreleased cantatas from Telemann's early Frankfurt years.
