Gambist Paolo Biordi performs these works with daring and virtuosity. He seems able to elicit the most out of his instrument, making each suite a smooth and powerful statement that both composers would certainly have applauded. The recording ambience is a bit live, but this gives depth to the playing, especially in the lower registers, which appear to sing. I like the tempos, and he handles the often gnarly lines with skill and dexterity. In short, this is a fine disc and one that should reveal the prowess of the gambists of Lully’s day. • © 2017 Fanfare
