John Worgan (1724-1790) was an English organist and harpsichordist who was one of the most highly thought of musicians in London at that time. He was admired by Handel, and was described by Burney as ‘very masterly and learned.’; The organist of Vauxhall Gardens as well as a number of other London churches, Worgan logically composed for his own instruments. Although most of his music was lost, his fifth son who was also a musician, James Worgan, published fifteen of his father’s pieces for organ after his death.; These pieces are performed on this album on the organ of St. Botolph’s without Aldgate (possibly England’s oldest church organ.) Worgan was organist here from 1753 until his death, so it is only fitting that this is the vehicle for performing his music.
