In 1688, when 52 year old Georg Daniel Speer had his Musicalisch-Türckischer Eulen-Spiegel published, he was an assistant teacher and organist in southern Germany. In this work, a mixture of songs and instrumental dances reflecting the exotic locations he himself had seen as a soldier, Speer set texts from his novel Ungarischer oder Dacianischer Simplicissimus, Gunar Letzbor, leader of the ensemble Ars Antiqua Austria has chosen a 2 CD program of war stories and love adventures.
