The Sonate concertate in stile moderno published by Dario Castello in two books in 1621 and 1629 were so pathbreaking that they continued to be reprinted, both in Venice and Antwerp, until 1658. While this composer’s music enjoyed great popularity, we know hardly anything about him except that he was the concertmaster at St. Mark’s Cathedral in Venice around 1629. The abundant and virtuosic solos occurring in the middle of most of his sonatas above all would have struck his contemporaries as innovative elements. Instrumental music has developed into an independent phenomenon next to vocal music here in Castello’s revolutionary sonatas. His ideas were so outstanding that they served as a fundamental model for at least half a century – as is clearly audible in the sonatas of Antonio Bertali and Johann Heinrich Schmelzer. Castello’s creations not only proved to be long-lived during the seventeenth century but also during recent decades have been reborn to new musical life. The Musica Fiata led by Roland Wilson offers an exemplary interpretation of sonatas from the second book.
