During Bach's time, Latin church music was also played in Leipzig on high festive days. To this end, Bach composed his four Latin short masses at the end of the 1730s, mainly using cantata movements. Long in the shadow of the B minor Mass, one gradually recognizes the quality of this extraordinarily beautiful music. The newly founded ensemble Pygmalion under the direction of Raphaël Pichon takes on this music with youthful vigour, but also with astonishing maturity.
