Composed at a time when neither oratorio nor opera existed, this Rappresentatione, premiered in February 1600, presents a masterful musical drama. The conflict between body and soul - a symbolic theme of the Counter-Reformation - demands singers, choir and a richly orchestrated orchestra, whose different timbres both accompany and characterize the soloists. At the beginning of the musical revolution of the baroque era, singing, stage action, dance and instrumental music are combined here in perfect harmony.
