Bossa Nova originated in Samba. It really came into existence during the second half of the fifties. The artists behind this new genre were Tom Jobim, Carlos Lyra, and especially Joao Gilberto (to which list, by rights, should also be added the poet Vinícius de Moraes). Their compositions, the fruit of a group of musicians sharing their ideas, had an innovatively casual feel, and used new harmonies with jazzy or European influences. All these young artists, who were mainly active at night, led a bohemian existence and were driven by the same unshakeable confidence in Brazil s future, and their hope that democracy and the economy would progress. They expressed this newly light-hearted atmosphere through recurrent themes like the sea, the waves, the beach, the sky, women and love. This handsomely presented collection combines 56 tracks by the above artists along with a host of their contemporaries, including the jazz artists - Stan Getz, Zoot Sims, Laurindo Almeida etc - who created a second wave of Bossa popularity, helping to turn it into a worldwide phenomenon.
