The musical drama "The Mantle" is the first of three one-act plays which, together with "Sister Angelika" and "Gianni Schicchi", were intended as a triptych and premiered in Rome on 11 January 1919. In "The Mantle" Puccini describes the hard life of the skippers at the turn of the century. Musically, this milieu study leads to harmonious innovations. Although some rules are suspended here, the Italian primacy of melody remains intact. This historical recording with the Berliner Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester dates from 1960 and shows not only the quality of this oldest German ensemble owned by broadcaster Rundfunk, but also the fruits of the collaboration with the excellent Rolf Kleinert.
