In 1994, a two-part film about the life of the Virgin of Orleans wrote cinema history: In "Joan, the Virgin - The Battle" and "Joan, the Virgin - The Betrayal" director Jacques Rivette described the life of the French national saint. The music for this internationally successful film came from Jordi Savall. After 20 years, Savall has now made the quarrelsome saint the subject of a CD book, which not least wants to shed light on the still regrettably current dichotomy between religion and fanaticism.
With music by famous composers from the time of the Virgin of Orleans such as Guillaume Dufay, Josquin Desprez, Johannes Cornago and others, as well as his own arrangements, Jordi Savall draws a lively portrait of a turbulent and troubled time. Texts by Johanna, including her own statements from her trial, gain an urgent topicality through the recitation of the actress and director Louise Moaty: after all, these are documents from a dispute in whose legal mechanics of the trial political concessions to religious fanaticism are revealed with an obviousness that, even according to Jordi Savall's conviction, can only be a salutary warning for today.
