The CD offers an insight into Viennese concert life at the turn of the 19th century. Born in Silesia, the forester was a highly regarded composer of his time. He was an oboist, studied organ and music theory in Prague and made a career as composer and teacher in Vienna. He was well acquainted with Mozart and Haydn and met the 22-year-old Beethoven under Prince Lichnowsky. His works, including his string quartets, are anything but academic - unlike in later times, this genre was also considered suitable for the entertainment of the educated. With surprise effects and unexpected twists and turns it knows how to captivate foresters, players and listeners.
