After his return from Rome, Charpentier began his career in Paris as a singer and composer, which eventually led him to the Sainte Chapelle de Paris. His "output" of religious compositions was phenomenal and eventually amounted to over 400 works. Very often there are motets for three male voices, usually with instrumental accompaniment.
