Werner was the first Kapellmeister at the court of Prince Esterhazy's direct predecessor Joseph Haydn and at least temporarily also his superior. He had studied with Johann Joseph Fux in Vienna; in 1728 he entered the service of the Esterhazys. While his sacred compositions were already regarded by his contemporaries as somewhat old-fashioned (because they represented the Fux polyphonic style), he was quite successful with his secular works, which are distinguished by their popular tone and full-blooded humour. His Musical Calendar lives on 17 very interesting minuets in addition to the programmatic sentences that characterize the individual months of the year. Some sentences reflect Telemann's late Baroque style, others follow the style of the Berlin School. Most, however, their style is already related to that of the early classical symphony.
