opis
On the occasion of the 400th anniversary of Gutenberg's invention of the art of printing, and with Beethoven's Ninth in mind, Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy wrote his pompous Symphony Cantata No. 2 with the subtitle "Lobgesang", the premiere of which in Leipzig in 1840 was a magnificent success. Three instrumental movements are followed by the cantata section, in which Mendelssohn skilfully reassembles texts from the Luther Bible as well as the text of the Protestant hymn "Nun danket alle Gott". Jun Märkl, who was praised for his Naxos recordings, which are "atmospherically dense, expressive and beautifully transparent" (pizzicato over 8. 572174 -Messiaen), succeeds in a stirring interpretation with an outstanding ensemble and the MDR Symphony Orchestra.
