Although Saint-Saens was supported at the beginning of his career by well-known colleagues such as Rossini and Berlioz, towards the end of his life leading composers such as Debussy rejected him as old-fashioned, even reactionary. Even his most famous works to date, The Carnival of the Animals and his Organ Symphony, were considered popular rather than serious art. Throughout his career, Camille Saint-Saens, who is today considered one of the most talented and prolific musicians or composers of the 19th century, composed music for woodwinds. These five works belong to the most beautiful that the repertoire for small wind ensembles has to offer and have been written during the composer's more than 50-year career with its contradictory character and reputation. The five members of the National Arts Centre Wind Quintet are not only among the best woodwind players in Canada, they are also the first musicians in their respective instrument groups in the National Arts Centre Orchestra Ottawa.
