opis
Johannes Brahms' strict judgment was feared, actually no one could please him, and often enough he took away all courage from young composers who showed him their works full of hope. It is therefore quite remarkable that he even chose one of these young musicians as his - only! - composition student: Gustav Jenner, born in 1865 in Keitum on the island of Sylt. After these studies in Vienna, Jenner was appointed university music director in Marburg, a position he held with great honor and success until his death in 1920. Because of his great modesty and also self-criticism, no doubt due to his very strict and demanding education by Brahms, he had few of his works printed, almost exclusively songs and chamber music.
The Mozart Piano Quartet and friends have now recorded for us his complete chamber music: 3 string quartets, a piano quartet and a trio for piano, clarinet and horn. After listening to these romantic gems, one can only agree with Hans Joachim Moser, who characterized Jenner in 1920 thus: "One of the most imposing artists of the strictly Brahmsian direction, visibly related to his master in tenderness and astringency."
