The fact that Denmark and its rich musical history have long attracted the attention of cpo is documented by many first recordings. For example, when we released the Second Symphony by Ludolf Nielsen (1876-1939) in 1995, hardly anyone knew this contemporary and namesake of the famous Carl Nielsen. The fact that he himself had been almost forgotten in Denmark is surely due to his calm, almost resigned nature, to which any elbow mentality was abhorrent. Despite Carl Nielsen's all-dominant position, Ludolf went his own stylistic way surprisingly unswervingly, and only today are we able to fully appreciate his importance and the very special charm of his music, which never denies Romanticism. He wrote little chamber music, including three string quartets. These, however, are among the most challenging and delightful that Danish chamber music has to offer. The young Danish Aros Quartet has now recorded the quartets No. 2 op. 5 and No. 3 op. 41 for cpo: wonderful discoveries!
