One of the most charming examples of Jommelli's operatic work The music-historical significance of Niccolò Jommelli has only been recognized in recent decades and is being increasingly appreciated: as an innovator in the field of opera, he is now considered by musicologists to be of similar importance to his contemporary Christoph Willibald Gluck. Like Gluck, Jommelli was instrumental in bringing the genre of opera from the late baroque to the stylistic realms of Viennese classicism.
"Il Vologeso" is one of the most delightful examples of Jommelli's operatic output: An intense story of life, love and death forms one of the most powerful operatic libretti to hit the stage in the 18th century. This first-class performance by the Stuttgart State Opera is the first staged performance of this material in more than 200 years. Jommelli's innovative, outstanding music is shown to its best advantage under Gabriele Ferro's direction with first-class soloists.
