For more than twenty years, led by its founder and musical director Thomas Van Haeperen, Sturm und Klang has been dedicated to creating and sharing contemporary music. The ensemble and its director have commissioned numerous works and are committed to being the most sensitive interpreters of the most inventive voices among Belgian music creators. As this double CD illustrates, Sturm und Klang works with composers who are already widely recognised, stimulating projects, commissions and the circulation of a rich collection of works in Belgium and abroad. But Sturm und Klang also distinguishes itself by providing solid support to the younger generation, notably by accompanying them in workshops dedicated to solving practical questions of writing and orchestration. Each Sturm und Klang concert is a celebration of living musical creation, each programme offered is a challenge that testifies to the taste for risk, for surpassing oneself, for the audacity of its musicians, and all this in a time when the simple fact of existing is the main challenge. “On the edge” is the fragile and tightrope position, but one that is essential in the crossing of our time, that all the artists gathered here assume.
