It was not until 1646 that he arrived in France as a page, where his incomparable career was to begin. Since the reigning minister and educator of the young Louis XIV, Cardinal Jules Mazarin (also a native Italian), encouraged everything Italian, there were not only a great many Italian artists at court, within the so popular ballets de cour, Italian-language intermezzi were long a fixture. Fabio Bonizzoni and his ensemble La Risonanza have recorded some of Lully's Italian intermezzi here, introducing us to a Lully in whom, despite the almost complete development of his personal style, something of Giovanni Battista Lulli can still be glimpsed from time to time.
