The recording of Rudolf Kempe's interpretation of Dvorak's 9th Symphony, now available on DVD, has already been released on CD by BBC Legends and sparked rave reviews in the Penguin Guide and by the Times critic, who remarked that Kempe's performance of the piece, although well known, could make you fall in love with it all over again.
Particular mention was made of the breathtaking delicacy of the pianissimo passages. In Ein Heldenleben by Richard Strauss, also recorded a year earlier at the Royal Albert Hall in London, special praise was given to the way Kempe, conducting from memory, both paid attention to each voice in the orchestra and seemed to have the whole work in mind at the same time. Unlike some conductors today, Kempe avoids the danger of overdoing it for the sake of mere effect. On the other hand, he also avoids the stiffness that can come from too much effort to achieve perfection.
