Well sung, but does not edge out Gardiner. Richard Croft is a wonderful Mozart tenor, but I have to agree with the reviewer who said he is miscast in the title role. Anthony Rolfe Johnson and Francisco Araiza are the only singers who have the necessary color and weight as well as the agility for the bravura arias. Domingo and Pavarotti have the tone but not the agility, and Bostridge may have agility but not the tone. Nicolai Gedda has a nice balance of the two but doesn't surpass the others in either department. Everything else about the present recording is top notch, including the outstanding chorus. As is often the case with these Jacobs recordings the vocal improvisations and keyboard embellishments will probably stale with repeated listenings. But that's why I have six other records to listen to in between.
