For almost the whole of the 15th century and well into the 16th century, Italian musical life was dominated by composers whose home was north of the Alps. Flanders and Northern France brought forth an avant-garde musical culture which, under the name "Franco-Flemish School", is still one of the highlights of music history today. Both Josquin Desprez, who was born in Hainaut and was already counted among the greatest composers of his time during his lifetime, and his younger colleague Jacquet de Mantua, who came from Brittany, spent most of their lives in the service of Italian church princes. Josquin, who was a singer at the papal chapel in Rome for a long time, wrote his Stabat Mater for the Burgundian court of Philip the Fair.
