WYCOFANY Matteis: Ayrs for the violin
By the end of the 17th century the violin had begun its triumphal march across musical Europe, with only England remaining as the bastion of the viola da gamba. The Neapolitan Nicola Matteis (ca. 1640-1714) played an important role in the conquest of this bastion, and Charles Burney later wrote admiringly that he had first made English ears suitable for the Italian style. In her recording, Hélène Schmitt conveys to us much of the joy of discovery that she had when playing this little-known, yet so immediately appealing music.
