Antonio Literes, the last Kapellmeister of the Habsburgs and one of the most successful composers of his time, composed his musical drama The Elements around 1704. Contemporaries praised his variable style, which could be ostentatious, simple or intimate. Theater lovers of the Baroque era liked to see allegories, and so here Fire, Water, Air and Earth wait for the dawn to break, praising themselves and their roles in nature.
