In 1976 István Párkányi, Heinz Oberdorfer, Ferdinand Erblich and the Romanian cellist Stefan Metz founded the Orlando Quartet. The new chamber music formation was immediately successful: In the same year, the ensemble won first prize at the Carlo Jachino International Quartet Competition in Rome. In close collaboration with Sándor Végh, the young quartet deepened its own style, and after five years of playing together, the NEW YORK TIMES ranked the quartet among the best string quartets in the world. Only three years later, in 1984, the quartet split up.

However, three members of the old formation have reunited and founded the Párkányi Quartet with the new cellist Michael Müller. Since 2000 the four musicians have been "Quartet in Residence" at the Amsterdam Conservatory. Their focus is on the Austro-Hungarian tradition, but they also devote themselves more and more intensively to the French repertoire.
