Bach's Coronation Mass • • On 1 February 1733 August II "the Strong", Elector of Saxony and King of Poland, died in Dresden. His son Friedrich August followed him as Elector of Saxony and, under the name August III, also as King of Poland. Father and son had converted to Catholicism for the Polish royal dignity, but did not neglect their Saxon homeland, the heartland of the Reformation. On 27 July 1733, Johann Sebastian Bach sent the new ruler Kyrie and Credo in B minor, which were also common parts of the Catholic mass in Lutheran worship, with a request for employment in court service, which the king did not grant until 1736, however, with an honorary title for the Leipzig Thomaskantor. In the last years of his life, Bach added the large measurement fragment from 1733 to the complete mass as it sounds here. (Msza h-moll )
