n 1951 Schmidt-Isserstedt invited Wilhelm Furtwängler to conduct a pure Brahms programme in Hamburg with the Haydn Variations, the Double Concerto and the 1st Symphony. The recording of the Double Concerto was unfortunately lost, of all things, because this work was one of the orchestra's trademarks. At least the recordings of the Haydn Variations and the 1st Symphony have survived the times. A highly interesting document, because at this concert Furtwängler had the unique opportunity to present his view of the composer to an audience with an affinity for Brahms through and through. And the conductor and orchestra grew beyond themselves. It is no wonder that French critics of the recording awarded the title "Diapason d'Or du siecle".
