In 1900 the great music scholar Hugo Riemann numbered Johann Friedrich Fasch »among the most outstanding contemporaries of Bach« and »among the most important pioneers of the new style that entirely supplanted the older one from Haydn and Mozart onward. « Riemann's words about the Zerbst court music director had little effect when he wrote them; it is only today, in the era of discographic discovery (not least on cpo!), that Fasch's name is more frequently heard in music circles. On the occasion of the 250th anniversary of Fasch's death, Ludger Rémy is presenting the recording premieresof six sumptuous orchestral works written by Fasch for the Dresden court ensemble. These works impressively document Fasch's role as an innovator primarily in the field of instrumental music while also demonstrating his continuous interest in artistic cooperation with this renowned ensemble. We may assume that his compositions calling for a large ensemble first and foremost were written to supply the Dresden demand for such works and to take advantage of the rich potential for musical realization available there. Here we have Fasch at his best!
