What wouldn't there be just English operas that would be worth showing to a large audience again? Edward Dent, musicologist and opera researcher, also dealt with this question in the 1940s and came to the conclusion that Macfarren's opera Robin Hood, which - overflowing with entertaining jokes - had already paved the way for Arthur Sullivan, certainly belonged on the list. What is certain is that Robin Hood is not only approaching Mr. Sullivan, but in retrospect is also waving and winking to Mr. Purcell. For Macfarren does not encounter the national myth Robin Hood with the stiff seriousness of Richard Wagner, but with a cheerful patriot heart that also knows romantic sides, as we know it from Purcell's King Arthur. No wonder, then, that this completely unknown opera lured its contemporaries in droves to the opera houses
