Distinguished in 2004 with the Grand Cross of the Infante D. Henrique Order by the then President of the Republic, Jorge Sampaio, Sequeira Costa was journalist Ana Sousa Dias, in an interview with RTP, that, because she had "fully embraced the spirit of Beethoven" by dedicating herself to the interpretation of the sonatas of the German composer, she felt "beyond human life.” one of the most significant names of Portuguese piano in the XX century, having founded the International Competition Vianna da Motta, himself Liszt's final pupil and with whom Costa had studied. 1951, Sequeira Costa won the Paris Grand Prix at the Marguerite Long International Competition, having since been one of the most prominent names on international stage. At the invitation of Dimitri Shostakovich, he was a member of the first jury of the Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow in 1958. From then on he was always a member of the jury of the most prestigious international piano competitions and gave numerous piano master classes all over the world.
