One of the most outstanding chamber music duos of our time, Isabelle Faust (with gut strings on the famous Stradivarius "Vieuxtemps") and Alexander Melnikov (on an Érard grand piano from ca. 1885), dedicates himself to the violin sonata by César Franck (1886) and reveals with incomparable sonority and density the original poetic power of this much-played masterpiece by Fin de Siècle. Franck's influence on Ernest Chausson's concert is unmistakable. Written six years after Franck's sonata and dedicated like this to the great violinist Eugène Ysaÿe, Chausson's most important chamber piece combines elements of the popular late romantic genres of the piano quintet and the string quintet. In the hands of Faust and Melnikov as well as the Salagon Quartet, also playing on historical instruments, the concerto gains a delicately luminous freshness.
