Jean Barrière (1707-1747) was the most respected French cellist of his time. It was his virtuosic playing of the viola da gamba that brought the breakthrough for the violoncello, which until then had been downright frowned upon. Some of the recorded works composed for treble viol show that even a barrière could not avoid the viola da gamba.
