opis
Nicola Porpora was born in Naples, but he only returned to his music-obsessed hometown as an old man to spend the last years of his life there in poverty. His career has taken him throughout Europe as a celebrated composer. It all started with Venice, Naples' powerful competitor in northern Italy. With his help, Handel's powerful Royal Academy of Music wanted to dig the water out of London. The project failed, but Porpora's fame did not suffer. Already Dresden called for him, the brilliant music centre; he stayed there for several years. The imperial city of Vienna followed, where he gave singing lessons to noble ladies. The famous opera librettist Pietro Metastasio gave the young Joseph Haydn the chance to get to know him. At that time, Haydn made a living as a music teacher, violinist and organist. Haydn became Porpora's pupil and servant. Posterity has not forgiven Porpora for his life on the wave of fashionable taste and banished him to the ranks of the little masters. With this recording, Juan Bautista Otero starts to revise this misjudgment.
