Carl Czerny is remembered as a pupil and friend of Beethoven and as a composer of numerous piano studies, but during his lifetime he was known for an enormous number of brilliant concert works, most of which are completely unknown to today's audiences and performers. Inspired by the most famous and attractive themes of bel canto operas, which were very popular in their time and are still performed today, these variations allow the soloist to express himself to the full and are an important contribution to the great pianist-composer tradition.
