A great many sparkling jewels. An all-around inspiring CD that makes one eager to hear the planned continuation!« These lines from the Austrian cultural daily drehpunktkultur refer to Vol. 1 of our edition featuring Michael Haydn's complete wind concertos – and now here it is: Vol. 2! And once again the wealth offered by a whole varied range of solo instruments in the serenades and concertos attests to the joy of experimentation typical of Michael Haydn. Here he also developed a personal touch distinguished by a musical sense of humor and rich imagination not encountered in just this same way in Wolfgang Amadé Mozart. Haydn's compositions appeal directly to the listener. His economical use of complex structures makes his music for solo instruments easy on the ears. Its typical features include the invention of beautiful melodies of cantabile character as well as passages of the highest virtuosity and technical difficulty challenging the soloists. The Salzburg court ensemble employed outstanding musicians on whom Haydn could rely for tasks of this kind. The Salzburg Hofkapelle continues to operate precisely in this tradition.
