This is undoubtedly a major voice of great musicality and allure. Alieva's recital album for Naxos and her duets CD with Antonenko, in combination with reports of her singing live, confirm her as the most exciting soprano talent to emerge in the last few years. She has a slightly smoky, plangent tone, evenness of production throughout her range, sensitivity to words and the ability to colour her voice aptly. It does no harm that she is personally very attractive, too. She is probably at her best in the Russian repertoire but her Italian is good - as evinced by her delivery of the spoken prelude to the "La travaiata" aria - and if her characterisation still lacks the last degree of individuality which is the property of the mature artist, that will come. I personally do not mind that the programme here is a little hackneyed given the quality of her performances; her voice is similar to that of Renée Fleming, in that you can just sit back and luxuriate in its splendour.
