This first recording of François Joubert-Caillet and his Achéron ensemble is dedicated to the work of Anthony Holborne, whose 1599 collection of works for viola da gamba and other instruments was the first publication of instrumental dances in England. The ensemble’s viol players used copies of English viols from the beginning of the 17th century; the extra length of these instrument's strings give them, and the entire consort, a truly remarkable and individualized sound.
