Jacques Hotteterre is the best-known representative of a large family of instrument makers whose members lived and worked in Paris over many generations. Moreover, over many generations the Hotteterres were also important figures in the French music world as oboists (Bass)oonists, flutists, and musette players. Jacques Hotteterre published his multifaceted Pièces pour la flûte traversière et autres instruments in 1708. Although the composer, who was also very talented as a flutist, was proud of his international renown, compiled a large library consisting of Italian music, and never failed to mention his sobriquet »Le Romain, « his collection of pieces is a pronouncedly French production with a typical focus on color, sonority, meter, lightness, discretion, and noblesse. It is thus hardly surprising that the Paris public around 1710 so highly valued this music. With this release the Camerata Köln launches its complete recording of Hotteterre's oeuvre on four CDs.
