Fascinating stylistic find The history of music continues to hold surprises and discoveries in store, thrusting an almost forgotten composer into the limelight: Franz Ignaz Beck is just such a case. The symphonies of this "18th-century Berlioz" are so madly unconventional and so bold that even today one can only marvel at the "modernity" of the contemporary Paris audiences that adulated him. Beck emerges as a true progressive and individualist in the "Sturm und Drang" mould, projecting the expressive resources of his time far into the future. From Mannheim, Beck advanced by way of Italy to Marseille, from where his symphonies developed into the big draw at the celebrated Parisian "Concerts spirituels" and went through several editions. We have brought together in an attractively-priced 3-CD box our recordings of the six Symphonies of op. 3 and nos. 1-3 of op. 4 in the acccomplished and intensive interpretation by La Stagione on period instruments under the direction of Michael Schneider.
