(…) After the Babylonian king Belshazzar defeated Cyrus, he wanted his wife as his wife. But the incarcerated person remains steadfast until death. And in the end he is rewarded with his life by God, who helps the Persians to overpower the Babylonians, and is reunited with Cyrus. A role that was tailor-made for the Polish singer Ewa Podles, the great and unrivaled, after Marilyn Horne the only real Rossini contralto player. The fact that the new production of "Ciro in Babilonia" in the beautiful old Teatro Rossini was a great moment is not only due to the brilliant singing skills of Ewa Podles and an impeccable ensemble of singers grouped around her, as well as the very animated orchestra of the Teatro Comunale di Bologna under Will Crutchfield.
