Georges Bizet won a competition in Paris in 1856, initiated and financed by Jacques Offenbach, with his first opera, the one-act "Le Docteur Miracle". Unfortunately, this charming little work is hardly known today, although it was rightly awarded first prize at the time. The highlight is the quartet about a poisoned omelette, a witty parody of the ensemble numbers of the Grand Opera à la Meyerbeer.
