Sir Colin Davis (25.09.1927-14.04.2013) had been associated with the Staatskapelle since 1981 and in those years of far-reaching changes, insecurities and new directions turned out to be not only a guest who liked to come to the Dresdeners for concerts, opera performances, recordings or tours (and then left again), but also a real friend of the orchestra, who took an active part in its problems. In a time without a chef, he felt jointly responsible for the stability of the artistic quality and the human cohesion, he gave advice, mediated external contacts to the Staatskapelle and stood up for their concerns (also internally) - he always had an open ear for the orchestra's concerns. His way of making music, which gives the musicians the feeling of great, free development possibilities despite all their natural ties to each other, to the musical text and to the conductor's baton, and which at the same time always means for him to be 'completely there for the cause', inspired and activated everyone who was lucky enough to be at his side in a special way. It was only logical that the Staatskapelle appointed Sir Colin Davis as its Honorary Conductor in 1991." Eberhard Steindorf (former dramaturge of the Staatskapelle Dresden)
