The expressive and imaginative string quartets are at the centre of Krzystof Meyer's work. The extreme emotional fluctuations of the 9th quartet are contrasted by the 11th quartet, whose single-movement form recalls the corresponding quartets by Shostakovich. The imaginative 12th Quartet can be regarded as the sum of what the composer has to contribute to the string quartet genre. The Wieniawski Quartet's previous recordings of Krzystof Meyer's Quartets Nos. 5, 6 and 8 (8.570776) had been welcomed as "an exceptional edition of very stimulating music" (MusicWeb International). Krzystof Meyer's "emotionally accessible and intellectually stimulating" string quartets (criticism on Amazon. co. uk) deserve a larger audience than their sparse availability in the current offering would suggest.
