NOX-LUX FRANCE & ANGLETERRE, 1200-1300 The program is built around the theme of Manicheism, the struggle between dark & light. The idea behind this recording is to gather a group of medieval pieces whose texts reveal those aspects of life associated with darkness, including sin, as a contrast to those concerning clarity and pureness. In terms of the performances, light wins out, although there is no shortage of shadows. Light is provided by the luminous voices of the members of La Reverdie, five women and a young male performer who also provide the instrumental accompaniment. —— (Early Music, 2001)
