She is attributed with the invention of the cantata, since she published, in 1653, vocal compositions under the title Cantate, arie e duetti. Regardless of this attribution being open to debate, Barbara Strozzi is, to the present day, still considered one of the creators of this genre, a veritable experimental laboratory of a new style and of a modern poetic-musical language. But above all, Barbara Strozzi embodies all the freedom of thought, morals and artistic creation that prevailed in Venice at the dawn of the Baroque era.
